Language

Our ability to understand and/or express ourselves verbally and/or in writing can be affected by a range of conditions. Common language impairments can include aphasia (expressive and/or receptive), high level language/cognitive communication disorders (including attention, working memory for language, pragmatics), right hemisphere brain disorders and more. Problems with finding the words we wish to say, structuring sentences and understanding instructions are just a few of the areas people living with language disorders can experience. Providing management for these disorders is an area the ESSP team excels in.

  • • Receptive aphasia (understanding difficulties) associated with stroke, brain tumours, neurosurgery and more
    • Expressive aphasia (expressive difficulties) associated with stroke, brain tumours, neurosurgery and more
    • Cognitive communication impairments associated with traumatic brain injury, dementia and more
    • Right hemisphere brain disorders associated with stroke, brain tumours, neurosurgery and more
    • Primary progressive aphasia
    • Fluctuating language presentations associated with neurodegenerative conditions such as multiple sclerosis
    • We treat new onset presentations through to people dealing with long term language disorders

  • • Use of advanced and comprehensive diagnostic assessments either in our rooms or in the home
    • Provision of a clear diagnosis of the language disorder with a breakdown of strengths and weaknesses from which we can work
    • Real-life goal setting tailored to the individual
    • Impairment-based treatments - that is, targeting the direct area of language breakdown. An example might be therapy to increase the speed and accuracy of word-finding in conversation
    • Personalised compensatory strategy development to assist the person and their conversation partners to make conversing as effective and seamless as possible
    • Functional therapy including looking at the key environments each patient usually communicates in as well as favourite topics to make rehabilitation as practical and rapid as possible
    • Technology based treatments using appropriate apps via smart phones, iPads, tablets and others
    • Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) strategy development and training
    • Progress and end-treatment assessments to track progress
